Elihu Washburne

Elihu Washburne

This is the remarkable and inspiring story-told largely in his own words- of American diplomat Elihu Washburne, who heroically aided his countrymen and other foreign nationals when Paris was devastated by war and revolutionin1870-71. Elihu Washburne rose from a hardscrabble existence in New England and the Midwest to become a congressman and diplomat. A confidante of Lincoln and Grant during the Civil War, Washburne was appointed Minister to France by Grant in 1869, arriving in Europe shortly before the outbreak of the Franco- Prussian War. When Bismarck ordered the Prussian army to lay siege to Paris, intent on forcing the French to surrender, Minister Washburne-alone among major power diplomats-remained at his post, determined to protect Americans and German nationals trapped in Paris. After the French capitulation, new horrors struck Paris. The government was toppled by a band of violent revolutionaries, known as the Commune, who embarked on a reign of terror that filled the streets with blood. Once again, Washburne stepped forward to help wherever he could until the Commune collapsed and its bloody orgy ended. During his ordeal Washburne endured cannon bombardments, brutally cold weather, dwindling food supplies, bouts of ill health, and long separations from his family. He witnessed the plight of starving women and children, riots in the streets, senseless executions, and countless acts of unspeakable violence and bloodshed. In the midst of it all, Washburne kept a remarkable personal diary that chronicled the monumental events swirling about him. He knew he was at the center of history and was determined to record what he saw. The diary-and letters he wrote to family and officials in Washington-provides a vivid personal account of life during some of Paris’s darkest days. Filled with political and military insight, Washburne’s writings also have an unmistakable charm, at times blending homespun expressions with quotations from Shakespeare and the Bible. Michae

No, Donald Trump, The Clinton Foundation Should Not Shut Down

Since Monday, Donald Trump and his campaign surrogates have issued a series of statements demanding that the Clinton Foundation close its doors, and return its donations. In addition to drawing blood from his political rival, Trump’s latest cry for attention perfectly fits into his narrative of a rigged political system shortchanging real Americans. To most Americans following this election cycle, the Clinton Foundation has represented an enigma onto which pundits can express their love, hatred, or ambivalence towards Hillary Clinton. But as a medical student who has extensively researched global health issues, it is clear to me that this organization deserves a more meaningful conversation, weighing the impact it has on the millions of lives it helps everyday against its tangible shortcomings.

I first heard about the Clinton Foundation not from the talking heads of cable television, but instead inside of a classroom in graduate school, while taking a course on applying cost-effectiveness analysis studies in healthcare. Working in groups of three, our final project was to conduct a study of our own, comparing a set of health interventions to address a disease against each other – based on how well they tended to work, and their cost. My team focused on assessing treatment strategies intended to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in South Africa. Each strategy involved varying degrees of diagnostic testing during pregnancy, and the provision of antiretroviral drugs to all pregnant women who tested positive for HIV. The prices for the necessary drugs used in these interventions were negotiated by an affiliate of the Clinton Foundation called the Clinton Health Access Initiative, or CHAI.

CHAI’s role in this case wasn’t one of a typical charity, in which money is collected and distributed to worthy causes. Instead, it acted as a facilitator, working with governments and pharmaceutical companies to strike a fair price for the people who depend on antiretroviral drug therapies to treat their HIV. If it were not for CHAI and its collaboration with a range of stakeholders, the results of our analysis would have wildly changed, and kept important medications needed to halt HIV epidemics financially out of reach for local governments. The Clinton Foundation’s work literally changed the calculus of tackling an issue as formidable as an HIV/AIDS epidemic spread across a continent; today, its efforts facilitate HIV drug treatments for over eleven million people in the developing world.

This is a story which often repeats itself across the Clinton Foundation and its work in global health, climate change, and promoting girls’ education, among other causes – of networking with private and public sector actors, and infusing technical expertise, to face complex challenges. Within an organization of its scope, there will undoubtedly be issues of transparency which merit discussion. But to casually suggest that a foundation which so deeply touches the lives of millions should close its doors is a privileged and myopic claim to make.

Perhaps what is most frightening about these latest statements made by the Trump campaign is the chord it has struck among so many. Those who tepidly agree with Trump have converged onto the idea that donors with altruistic intentions can pick another charity or foundation to support “for the next four or eight years,” but this solution is incredibly naïve, and neglects the Clinton Foundation’s unique role among stakeholders addressing issues in areas like global health today. I challenge anyone to find another foundation that works across a multitude of issues, and has built strong relationships with a range of public and private sector actors driven by a mission of pragmatism.

Make no mistake, Hillary Clinton and her campaign have questions to answer when it comes to conflicts of interest entangled within her tenure as our nation’s chief diplomat. Trump’s solution to this concern, however, is not a sensible one. In an election cycle this morbid, organizations like the Clinton Foundation do the work of projecting a positive image of the United States to many corners of the globe. Rather than shut down it, we need more organizations like it – ones which value inventing out-of-the-box solutions for helping those in need.

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

The Five Reasons Donald Trump Will Be Our Next President

You won’t see another article like this one anywhere else in the mainstream news media; certainly not in The Huffington Post.

That’s because it’s blatantly obvious that the media doesn’t want Donald Trump to be elected President.

Think about it: with the possible exception of Fox News, Breitbart and Drudge, there isn’t one news outlet that isn’t supporting Hillary Clinton.

And if you think Americans don’t like our current President or Congress, there’s new reason to believe that Americans trust journalists and media people even less than our roundly despised elected leaders.

A 2012 Gallup poll–don’t trust polls, as I drive home later … but this one is to be trusted–shouted “U.S. Distrust in Media Hits New High,” as if it was unbelievable. It wasn’t, LOL, and can only have gotten worse in the four years since.

Turns out that while 60% of those asked had “little or no trust in the mass media,” only 10% had “a great deal of trust and confidence” in the media. I read this as 90% of America was not enamored of the press in 2012.

Lastly, 44% said the news media are “too liberal” while only 19% said it was “too conservative.” (What, I like to imagine are those clueless 19% like?)

All of this stale data gives us some idea of precisely why you won’t see an article taking this thrust or political orientation anywhere else. Why is this important? Figure it out.

Just as I watch Maddow, Matthews, Todd and other Leftist “journos,” so too should Liberals read this if only to find out what the enemy is thinking.

It also speaks to why I am one of the only–if not the only Conservative writer on HuffPo. (Great thanks for this go out to Arianna Huffington for her foresight.)

Here now, the Five Reasons:

1. Donald Trump’s Campaign Rallies–nothing can top a Trump Rally. I’ve been to both a Trump and Clinton Rally and they are night-and-day different.

Hillary’s event was in a gymnasium, poorly attended, had an audience that needed constant prodding. At the last minute, a bunch of unrelated crowd-fillers were scooted in awkwardly and trained up to cheer when cued. There were no protesters, as if nobody has anything to protest Hillary about. And Hillary’s speech was wooden, shrill and without passion.

Compare this to the organized, excited buzz of a Trump Rally. Over 4500 people filling a 4000-capacity nightclub. with thousands of disappointed yet still excited Trumpers outside who couldn’t get in but waiting anyway.

Inside Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Women, Gays (many holding ‘Blanks’ for Trump signs, that’s how I knew), pregnant women and lots of children, running around and allowed to have fun and play. It was a safe environment with people who exhibited manners and seemed to make room for each other.

The press at the event I attended reported “thousands of anti-Trump protesters.” I went to investigate. What I saw were a very motley crew of approximately 75 miscreants, uncoordinated and unable to intelligently describe what was wrong with Trump or what their gripes were. A reasonable conversation was impossible. Turns out, these poor souls were bused in, given $ 20 and a sandwich for their trouble. Or to start trouble. Pathetic.

It’s the first event I’ve been to in my life that started with The National Anthem, a benediction prayer AND The Pledge of Allegiance. (A commentary on the current state of our country is the fact that I hadn’t spoken the Pledge since I was a grade-schooler–a horrible situation.) There were American flags festooned all over the place, unlike the first night of the DNC.

And when Donald Trump spoke, people listened. When people protested, he asked them to leave until the audience took that upon themselves, chanting “Trump, Trump. Trump” until the interrupters left on their own, gladly.

All in all, Trump has created something really special with his rallies. Something no other political candidate has replicated ever, because Trump’s one of a kind. The difference in his rallies is one of the things that will get him elected.

2. Trump is FUNNY; People Like Funny. And, Hillary is Anything But–Who would you rather listen to? Follow? Someone funny or someone shrill? I know my answer. I can’t stand Hillary’s nasty, high-pitched tones and absurd paranoia. She’s got a congenital deficiency in the Truth Hormone and is currently on public trial on a number of atrocities. So that’s really not funny.

On the other hand, we have Trump who makes me laugh about every other paragraph of his speeches. This is most obvious at his rallies when he tells a protester to “go home to Mommy” or “You’re so politically correct, you’re a real beauty.” Trump crowds wait for his humor and react with glee.

This Trump Humor will serve him well when the debates begin. Hillary will have only accusations, meanness and unsupported claims to hurl at Trump. In the meantime, Trump will castigate Hillary with humor, cheerfulness and fun-poking which she cannot counter.

Trump may be behind in the polls now, but just Like Ronald Reagan versus Walter Mondale with his elegant yet campaign-piercing “I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience” lightning-bolt, Trump is filled with these kinds of retorts that will eviscerate Hillary in the debate. There’s no way for her to prepare. Nobody can fill-in for Trump during her mock preparatory debates. She’s done once the debates start. Trump wins every one of the three without even breaking a sweat.

Another good yardstick is likability. People I know who have met Trump (including myself) seem to like him, some immensely. Hillary not so much. People don’t respond to Hillary’s known backstage personality because she’s cold, calculating and absolutely ruthless. I reference the book, “Unlikable.”

3. The Polls Are Not To Be Trusted–Who conducts these polls anyway? The aforementioned news media, generally in partnership with an academic institution of some kind. Oh, there’s another Liberal audience that can never vote anything but Democratic: Academics. It’s no wonder that skewed results are plastered all over our TVs, newspapers and Internet publications when polls are conducted. This is the news media’s main, centralized, not-too-secret secret sauce that let’s them cheer-lead their candidates onto undeserved victory. The Media has long thought they have Americans’ minds in the bag–that they can make anything happen by controlling what and how Americans think including get their candidate elected.

It’s about time this media manipulation, ‘medipulation’ I’ll call it, stops.

The one possible landmine of this spinning of the polls by a Liberal media, academics and politicians is that they forget that by putting their candidate ahead when they’re really not, they run the risk of their voters staying home and consequently, giving the election to the Conservative candidate they tried to bamboozle. Trump voters are also staying hidden; they don’t want to deal with the Liberals’ nastiness so they keep to themselves until Election Day. Wait and see how many people come out for Trump; it may be shocking.

I am waiting for this and hope it happens in November.

4. Trump’s Spent Virtually Nothing; Hillary Over $ 100 Million–Here we are in mid to late August and Trump is staying close to Clinton having spent little to defeat 16 other hopeful Republican nominees, get through his national convention with the nomination and finally, begin the general election campaign. Most honest political insiders and campaign people are astonished at this. It’s never been done before. So let’s not forget it.

Simultaneously, Clinton has spent a hundred million or more (her campaign won’t release specifics so you can be sure it’s a boatload) just getting past a Socialist curmudgeon, her convention and the start of the Damning of Trump.

As the news media has ignored how much Hillary is spending, they have a morbid fascination with how much Trump has to spend. Look, Donald Trump is the only candidate in American history who can write himself a $ 250 million check just to get things started; out of petty cash. This ability is not only sui generis but also bespeaks another underlying Trump advantage: He doesn’t depend on outside patrons, lobbyists, corporations and Wall Street, as Hillary clearly does.

5. Hillary’s Future is VERY Uncertain; an ‘October Surprise?’–Definitely. Hillary’s lies simply must catch up to her eventually. There’s a simple truth that we all learn as children: that liars always get their just desserts. Even Hillary’s base doesn’t trust her. Her party doesn’t trust her. President Obama doesn’t trust her. She, along with her disgraced husband, are unconvincing truth-tellers. They just cannot be believed about anything.

So this leaves Hillary only one competitive option: Call Donald Trump a liar at every turn. Say he’s dangerous. Say he can’t be trusted with the nuclear codes. Say he doesn’t have the right “temperament.” And hope all that sticks.

If we are to believe Julian Assange, there will be an ‘October Surprise.’ The drip, drip, drip of the dual investigations on her email server and the Clinton Global Initiative have taken their toll on her and her campaign and will yield more damaging info in the run-up to the election.

The dreadful Iran Deal and her involvement in the early days of its strategic evolution with also continue to hurt her.

The Democratic Party, Liberal media and Hillary’s own supporters are scared. They try to hide it but they can’t. There’s good reason for their worries.

If I’m Donald Trump and his campaign, I’d much rather have my opponents all worried about me than the reverse. Psychologically, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy to be afraid before going into battle. Ask a Spartan.

So in conclusion, I don’t believe that Hillary Clinton, with all her baggage packed in steamer trunks, can beat Donald Trump.

No matter how much the Liberal news media presses and supports her against one of their central reason for existing–to keep elected officials honest through oversight–people won;t believe them. There’s no media oversight of Hillary Clinton. While Donald Trump is constantly scrutinized with a magnifying glass by a rabidly Leftist media.

I could be wrong.

I’ve been wrong so many times before.

But I don’t think I’m wrong here and now.

Let’s hope for the future of America that Hillary Clinton loses in November.

Any other result continues America’s eight-year-long journey down the wrong path.

Angels and Molecules

The other day my wife, Ana, and I went out for a few hours. When we came back, we parked the car, entered through the downstairs garage door, came up to the first floor and into the living room. Where we saw our intrepid dog Ben, standing on the back of the living room couch, gazing out the window. Waiting.

To explain: Ana is the center of Ben’s universe, the sun around which all his planets revolve. She is his oxygen, his A to Z, his why the universe exists. He was waiting for her.

But Ben has gone deaf. He had somehow missed seeing the car’s approach, and hadn’t heard it come down the drive, or the motorized grind of the garage door opening, or our footsteps up the stairs. As far as he knew, we were still gone.

2016-08-19-1471640868-7835203-Ben2.jpg

Moments after I snapped this picture, I clapped, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned his head and saw Ana — and his little dog face broke into an ecstatic OMG, why didn’t someone tell me?! and all was right with the world.

It made me think of Beethoven.

Late in life, Beethoven was attending the premier of his ninth (and final) symphony. “Attending” is perhaps not the right word. Although he was by this time deaf as a board, he strongly felt he should be on hand to guide the musicians along in this huge and enormously challenging composition, so he stood right up there on stage, by the conductor, and gestured like crazy throughout the performance, doing his utmost to shape the right tempi and dynamics and phrasing — even though he could not hear a note.

After the last chord was sounded, the composer stood on the stage, breathing heavily, facing the orchestra. The audience, who had never heard anything like this before (nor, for that matter, had anyone on the planet), erupted into raucous, deafening applause.

The composer was oblivious. He had no idea anyone was even clapping. The mezzo-soprano soloist had to approach him (with tears in her eyes, and can you blame her?) and tug on his arm to get him to turn around and see the thunderous response his music has evoked.

This got me thinking:

What if we’re all like Ben and Beethoven?

What if we are surrounded by all the applause, but just don’t hear it? If the center of our universe, the thing we love most, has already arrived and is standing there watching us, but we just don’t know it yet?

I remember as a teenager, taking a walk one morning in my neighborhood, going blocks and blocks in my quiet suburban town, a Sunday, hardly anyone about. I’d been reading about physics and metaphysics and different thinkers’ understandings of how reality was assembled. I remember stopping, standing, and gazing out along a path down to a field.

It suddenly hit me that I was surrounded by billions, trillions, quadrillions of molecules, atoms, particles, all buzzing and humming and soaring in orbits around each other, vibrating like mad. I was a musician and student of acoustics, and I knew this basic fact of life: vibration makes noise. I was standing in the midst of the most colossal symphony imaginable. I just couldn’t hear it.

Although for those few moments, it felt as if I almost did.

There is an ancient tradition in Bali which holds that a gamelan orchestra, that most mesmerizing of human musical ensembles, doesn’t “make” its music. No, say the Balinese, that rippling stream of rhythm and melody is already happening, already going on, all around us, all the time. The job of the gamelan musicians is not to create the music, but simply to catch it, like a crystal set picking up radio waves and stepping them down to audible form.

What if we are surrounded by symphonies?

What if our ancestors, departed parents, and all those loved ones who have shuffled off before us are in fact standing right beside us, beaming with pleasure at our antics, cheering us on?

What if throngs of angels are stomping and hooting and laughing and shouting, exuberant as a sold-out Bruce Springsteen auditorium just to be there watching us, applauding our every mundane move like a chorus of thunderclaps?

You know, I think they may be.

You can almost hear them, can’t you?

Back to School Means Heavy Backpacks And Back Pain

With school is just around the corner, children will be abandoning the playground and returning to the classroom. With an emphasis on providing a sound education for this young generation, children are given a literal “heavier” workload year after year. This has translated into more books and more accessories, which greatly contributes to the normalcy and reliance on carrying backpacks. However, despite their usefulness, backpacks can cause serious back pain if overloaded or worn improperly.

2016-08-20-1471714844-4735983-Untitled.png

To understand how heavy backpacks contribute to back pain, it’s important to look at the composition of the back. The adolescent spine is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae with discs between them that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy backpack is incorrectly placed over a child’s shoulders, the weight of the bag can force the child backwards. Usually, children counteract this force by arching or bending forward at the hips, causing the spine to compress unnaturally and contributing to neck, shoulder and back pain.

2016-08-20-1471714971-3849456-1.png

The best way to prevent lower back pain is to either avoid overstuffing a backpack. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, children should limit their backpack weight to between 10 and 15 percent of their body weight. Backpacks weighing more than this are too heavy to maintain a standing posture. This weight causes children to lean forward, affecting the natural curve in the lumbar and lower back regions resulting in variety of orthopaedic injuries.

Dr. Ebraheim says,
“Kids these days think backpacks are moving libraries, carrying heavier weights back and forth to school and between classes without taking breaks. The weight can cause a variety of back problems including scoliosis. This is a problem not only for the child’s health but also because back pain can interfere with the learning environment. Kids need to feel healthy during the day so they can keep up with their schoolwork injury free.”

Wearing a backing improperly can also cause back injury. Many times children will sling their backpacks over only one shoulder. This uneven distribution of weight causes the child to compensate by leaning to one side. The frequent imbalance causes muscle strain. The problem can be exacerbated if backpacks have tight or narrow straps, as they can interfere with circulation and nerves.

There are, however, some simple ways to prevent your child from developing back pain. First, it’s important to monitor the weight of children’s backpacks to ensure that they are not overloading them. Second, purchase a backpack with wide, padded straps to distribute the load over the shoulders evenly. Backpacks that have waist and additional shoulder straps may also prove beneficial in transferring the load to the hips and preventing slouching. Lastly, it’s important to concentrate the bulk of the weight closest to your child’s body in the middle of the back. This will help your child achieve better posture and balance, while preventing possible falls.

Friday Talking Points — GOP Anti-Trump Rants

This column has always loved a good rant. Most of the time, we provide our own rant at the end of the column, on a subject too big to be contained in talking points. This week, we provide a number of rants from Republicans about their very own party’s presidential nominee. Yes, it’s only August and the Republican Party is coming apart at the seams. Which, of course, makes for great summertime reading for all!

Before we get to all the Republican-on-Republican violence, though, we’ve got to cast an eye over the week that was. If there’s one thing that is unmistakably true about Donald Trump it is that he just can’t help himself. You can read that literally — nothing he seems to do ever improves his standing with the general electorate — or as a metaphor for Trump’s inability to stop saying silly and outrageous things in public. Either way, Trump certainly does pack a lot into a single campaign week, and can probably be expected to continue doing so right up to Election Day.

This was (as were many other previous weeks in the campaign calendar) supposed to be the week when Donald Trump successfully “pivoted” and turned everything around. To say that didn’t happen would be an understatement. Hillary Clinton had a mini-scandal break that even involved emails, and yet it was barely a story in the political world (the emails weren’t all that damning, even to anti-Clinton types) — because Trump was, once again, sucking up all the oxygen.

Trump started the week off with a serious, read-from-a-TelePrompTer speech on the economy. This was the big pivot, folks! Everyone look — Trump’s being serious. Right up until he mispronounced the word “cities,” inexplicably replacing the “c” with a “t.” So much for being serious.

Later in the week, Trump claimed that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton got together a few years ago and said to each other: “Hey, we’ve got some free time, why not start a jihadist group in Iran and Syria?” No, really — Trump claimed both Obama and Clinton were not only “founders” of the Islamic State, but apparently also that the Islamic State has somehow become a sports league who hands out “most valuable player” awards — which would, of course, go to Obama and Clinton. Got all that? When gently asked to perhaps rephrase his statement a bit, Trump (of course) declined.

Trump also proposed during the week that U.S. civilians accused of terrorism either be sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, or be tried in military tribunals. This remark, while shockingly unconstitutional, kind of got lost in the whirlwind, though.

Much more attention was paid to Trump using the “Second Amendment people” dog-whistle to a crowd, suggesting that perhaps guns would be the best answer if President Hillary Clinton ever started trying to appoint federal judges.

Once again, any one of these statements would have been a career-ender for just about any political candidate imaginable, but then Donald Trump is beyond “imaginable” and always has been.

Trump utterly blew his planned pivot to seriousness, pretty much all week long. He even blew a chance to rip into Clinton for having the Orlando shooter’s father behind her at a rally — while congressional-page-enthusiast Mark Foley was sitting right behind Trump. It’s like we’ve all fallen into a bad Hollywood script that would never have been greenlighted for a movie, or something.

While Trump continues to absolutely tank in the polls (including all of the swing states he would need to claim victory), the Republican National Committee is apparently getting a wee bit nervous. They’re holding what is being described as a “come to Jesus” meeting with Trump campaign staffers today, so who knows what will happen next? Some prominent Republicans are already publicly calling for the R.N.C. to direct all its money away from Trump and instead towards desperately trying to hold onto some Senate and House seats, but we’ll get to that in the talking points section.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton’s campaign has pulled all advertising out of Virginia and Colorado, because they consider those two swing states in the bag for Clinton. Instead, they’re expanding operations in (are you sitting down?) Arizona and Georgia. No wonder some Republicans are already darkly muttering about the impending landslide that’s going to bury Trump. Hillary Clinton even wrote an op-ed for a Utah paper, a formerly reddest-of-the-red state that could also flip for her.

Team Clinton is almost gleeful in their triangulation plans, at this point. Hillary is reaching out to Republican voters everywhere, but in doing so she risks generating some backlash among progressives, who already mistrust her. But the confidence being exuded by the Clinton campaign is palpable, and today Hillary released her 2015 tax return while taunting Trump to do the same (with a new “What’s he trying to hide” ad).

All that, in one week. Whew! And it’s only August… things will undoubtedly speed up even further in the coming months. But for now, let’s move right along to the awards.

Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week

Senator Bernie Sanders gets a Honorable Mention this week, for clearly denouncing the decision made this week by the Drug Enforcement Agency to keep marijuana on Schedule I, a definition that includes the phrase “has no currently accepted medical use” — even though half of the United States have now legalized medicinal use. Sanders is also co-sponsor in the Senate of a bill that would throw the legal issue to the states once and for all. See my column from yesterday for more details about this backward-facing decision, but it’s good to see a politician who isn’t afraid to get on the right side of history in such fashion.

But the Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week this week goes to none other than President Obama. What with everyone intensely watching all the polling surrounding the presidential race, Obama’s job approval numbers haven’t been in the news of late. They should be, however.

This week, on the Real Clear Politics tracking page, Obama sits at 51.9 percent approval from the public, with only 44.2 percent disapproval. Those are better numbers than he’s seen since the second month of his second term, three-and-a-half years ago. Obama not only has been rising all year long, but he also got a convention “bump” in the polls on top of it. This should cheer up Hillary Clinton, because presidential job approval polling is very predictive of who will win in November. If Obama keeps his numbers above 50 until then — as now seems entirely possible — then Clinton might just be a shoo-in.

There’s a simple explanation for this trend. It’s not because of some big legislative victory Obama just won in Congress (Congress has barely done anything this year). It’s not because of some dramatic foreign or domestic policy win, either. Obama is rising in the public’s estimation because people are now being seriously confronted with the two candidates who might be our next president. In other words, the more the public pays attention to the 2016 campaign, the better they think of the job Barack Obama is doing.

One of the most amusing moments at the Democratic National Convention was hearing, during President Obama’s speech, several shouts of “Four more years!” (even though this is constitutionally impossible). It seems a whole lot of other people are going to miss Obama when he’s gone, and his spike upwards in the polls to almost 52 percent approval wins President Obama this week’s Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week.

[Congratulate President Barack Obama via the White House contact page, to let him know you appreciate his efforts.]

Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week

We almost didn’t have anyone to give this week’s Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week award, but one really stupid gaffe caught our eye at the last moment.

Congressman Patrick Murphy is running in the Democratic primary in Florida to be the Democrat to take on Marco Rubio. While criticizing Donald Trump (and his “hatred and fear-mongering”), Murphy had the following to say, to Jorge Ramos:

We are stronger as one, as a united country. That’s what makes this country so beautiful and so unique. You know, you think of the Statue of Liberty, right? And all of us. I’m an immigrant. We’re all basically immigrants here. And you think of that beacon of hope, of opportunity, and Trump is tearing that apart. And that is scary to me.

Except that he’s not actually an immigrant. From his own official biography page, he was “born and raised in Florida, spending most of his childhood along the South Florida coast.” He’s also already gotten into trouble about exaggerating his own history during his campaign — which would tend to make you a lot more careful about what you say, you would think.

Reasonable people can interpret this as a weak attempt at a sweeping statement. “I’m an immigrant,” Murphy says, in the same spirit that we were all Charlie Hebdo, in other words. “Most Americans are,” Murphy might have said, “if you go back far enough in their family, immigrants.” Unfortunately he didn’t say that. He said “I’m an immigrant” when he most decidedly is not one. In Florida, where a lot of people care about that particular distinction.

This was a stumble, not an enormous fall. As we said, it almost doesn’t even reach the level of the MDDOTW award, but for his political misstatement he was more disappointing than any other Democrat this week, so we decided to go ahead and give Murphy the award anyway.

[Contact Representative Patrick Murphy on his House contact page, to let him know what you think of his actions.]

Friday Talking Points

Volume 403 (8/12/16)

It is extraordinarily rare for prominent members of a political party to publicly denounce their chosen presidential nominee. It’s so rare in normal elections that it becomes big news immediately. This election, however, it has become almost commonplace for Republicans to repudiate Donald Trump’s candidacy. As a mark of how commonplace it is, we had not just one scathing indictment of Trump and his campaign this week, but three.

The first is from Republican Senator Susan Collins, of Maine, who penned an op-ed piece in the Washington Post, explaining why she cannot bring herself to vote for or support her party’s nominee. The second was from a group of 50 national security professionals stretching from the Nixon administration to the Cheney administration (whoops, we meant to say the “Bush administration,” obviously). Kidding aside, these are the serious foreign policy types on the right, and they not only stated they weren’t going to vote for Trump, they predicted that if he wins he will be “the most reckless President in American history.” And the third public evisceration of Trump came from 70 Republicans who called on the Republican National Committee to “immediately halt all support for Donald Trump and invest its resources in a real and winnable campaign to save the Republican Senate and House.”

So with that wealth of anti-Trump material coming from his own party, it seems almost redundant to come up with Democratic talking points this week. There is plenty of material available — just in the past week alone — that badmouths Trump worse than we could hope to do. So we’re just going to provide excerpts from these three documents, with a bonus quote at the end, just for the heck of it.

Senator Susan Collins

Senator Collins started her opinion piece off with a flat statement: “I will not be voting for Donald Trump for president.” She explains how she struggled with this decision, but Donald Trump just made it harder and harder for her to explain away his own behavior.

With the passage of time, I have become increasingly dismayed by his constant stream of cruel comments and his inability to admit error or apologize. But it was his attacks directed at people who could not respond on an equal footing — either because they do not share his power or stature or because professional responsibility precluded them from engaging at such a level — that revealed Mr. Trump as unworthy of being our president.

My conclusion about Mr. Trump’s unsuitability for office is based on his disregard for the precept of treating others with respect, an idea that should transcend politics. Instead, he opts to mock the vulnerable and inflame prejudices by attacking ethnic and religious minorities. Three incidents in particular have led me to the inescapable conclusion that Mr. Trump lacks the temperament, self-discipline and judgment required to be president.

Collins then lists her three incidents — Trump mocking a reporter for his disability, Trump stating that a judge born in Indiana couldn’t possibly be fair to him because of his “Mexican heritage,” and Trump’s attacks on the Gold Star parents who appeared at the Democratic National Convention. Each time, says Collins, she “waited in vain for Mr. Trump to retract his words.” Then she begins painting a larger picture.

I am also deeply concerned that Mr. Trump’s lack of self-restraint and his barrage of ill-informed comments would make an already perilous world even more so. It is reckless for a presidential candidate to publicly raise doubts about honoring treaty commitments with our allies. Mr. Trump’s tendency to lash out when challenged further escalates the possibility of disputes spinning dangerously out of control.

I had hoped that we would see a “new” Donald Trump as a general-election candidate — one who would focus on jobs and the economy, tone down his rhetoric, develop more thoughtful policies and, yes, apologize for ill-tempered rants. But the unpleasant reality that I have had to accept is that there will be no “new” Donald Trump, just the same candidate who will slash and burn and trample anything and anyone he perceives as being in his way or an easy scapegoat. Regrettably, his essential character appears to be fixed, and he seems incapable of change or growth.

Pretty harsh, but this was actually the kindest towards Trump of the three documents released this week. Which brings us to the next one, from the foreign policy experts.

National security officials’ letter

This extraordinary letter also starts off (after an introductory paragraph explaining who the group is) with a blanket statement: “None of us will vote for Donald Trump.” Once again, these are all Republicans, not some partisan sniping by Democrats. This letter minces no words whatsoever.

From a foreign policy perspective, Donald Trump is not qualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief. Indeed, we are convinced that he would be a dangerous President and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.

Most fundamentally, Mr. Trump lacks the character, values, and experience to be President. He weakens U.S. moral authority as the leader of the free world. He appears to lack basic knowledge about and belief in the U.S. Constitution, U.S. laws, and U.S. institutions, including religious tolerance, freedom of the press, and an independent judiciary.

The letter ends by first explaining all the qualities and temperament necessary for any president (willing to listen to advisors, acknowledge errors, be disciplined, etc.). Then it tears into how far Trump falls short:

In our judgment, Mr. Trump has none of these critical qualities. He is unable or unwilling to separate truth from falsehood. He does not encourage conflicting views. He lacks self-control and acts impetuously. He cannot tolerate personal criticism. He has alarmed our closest allies with his erratic behavior. All of these are dangerous qualities in an individual who aspires to be President and Commander-in-Chief, with command of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

We understand that many Americans are profoundly frustrated with the federal government and its inability to solve pressing domestic and international problems. We also know that many have doubts about Hillary Clinton, as do many of us. But Donald Trump is not the answer to America’s daunting challenges and to this crucial election. We are convinced that in the Oval Office, he would be the most reckless President in American history.

C’mon, guys, tell us what you really think! Sorry, but at some point you just have to laugh at the language fellow Republicans are using against their own candidate. This letter lays out one targeted idea — Trump being unfit to handle foreign policy — while the next brings a very different focus.

Begging the RNC to bail on Trump

The third letter is entirely political in nature, since it was addressed to Reince Priebus and the Republican National Committee. It begs the R.N.C. to ditch Trump in no uncertain terms, from the second paragraph onwards.

Given the catastrophic impact that Donald Trump’s losing presidential campaign will have on down-ballot Senate and House races, we urge you to immediately suspend all discretionary RNC support for Trump and focus the entirety of the RNC’s available resources on preserving the GOP’s congressional majorities.

They have already given up on winning the White House, obviously, and are now terrified that they are facing a disastrous landslide in November.

We believe that Donald Trump’s divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence, and record-breaking unpopularity risk turning this election into a Democratic landslide, and only the immediate shift of all available RNC resources to vulnerable Senate and House races will prevent the GOP from drowning with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck.

This should not be a difficult decision, as Donald Trump’s chances of being elected president are evaporating by the day.

“Evaporating by the day” — that has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? The letter then lists all the reasons why Trump has already “alienated millions of voters of all parties,” most of which are specific but also including a few catchall items on the list, such as: “Exposing his total ignorance of basic foreign policy matters,” and: “Deliberately and repeatedly lying about scores of issues, large and small.” They even slam Trump for not releasing his tax forms, then continue in the same vein.

Those recent outrages have built on his campaign of anger and exclusion, during which he has mocked and offended millions of voters, including the disabled, women, Muslims, immigrants, and minorities. He also has shown dangerous authoritarian tendencies, including threats to ban an entire religion from entering the country, order the military to break the law by torturing prisoners, kill the families of suspected terrorists, track law-abiding Muslim citizens in databases, and use executive orders to implement other illegal and unconstitutional measures.

Since it’s a letter with a political focus, it then turns to the dismal polling they’ve been seeing:

[C]urrent polling gives Trump barely a 15 percent chance of being elected president in November. That polling projects a potential 350 electoral vote blowout for Hillary Clinton, including a sweep of every battleground state from Florida to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina. Trump’s across-the-board collapse has put even Republican bastions like Georgia and Arizona in play.

That’s a pretty apocalyptic statement for the beginning of August! It’s understandable when people get nervous a few weeks out from an election, but the general election has barely begun, and these Republicans are already worried about Hillary Clinton getting 350 electoral votes.

The letter then itemizes Trump’s refusal to support members of the Republican Party, which includes things like calling an “incumbent Republican Senator a ‘loser’ to his Senate peers,” and “Repeating his false and outlandish claims that yet another Senator’s father played some role in the Kennedy assassination.” This leads them to an extraordinary conclusion — again, it is only early August.

In summary, every dollar spent by the RNC on Donald Trump’s campaign is a dollar of donor money wasted on the losing effort of a candidate who has actively undermined the GOP at every turn. Rather than throwing good money after bad, the RNC should shift its strategy and its resources to convince voters not to give Hillary Clinton the “blank check” of a Democrat-controlled Congress to advance her big government agenda.

Rick Wilson minces no words

All of that was pretty scathing, we’ve got to admit. Republican-on-Republican violence is never pretty to watch, to put it mildly. But when reading an article in Salon which detailed how many extreme rightwing strategists and media types have denounced Trump, the following really stood out. We close today with the thoughts of Rick Wilson, “GOP strategist.”

I have opposed Trump from the first day of his wretched, crapulous campaign. I have opposed Trump when his clownish minions called my clients seeking to have me fired. I have opposed The Donald when his slavish of Trumpbart stooges ran story after story attacking me, and unleashed their fever-swamp yokels on my email, my phone and my family.

I will continue to oppose Trump, implacably and unceasingly.

I will not bend. I will not cease this fight. I will never embrace this thuggish, venal, gibbering psychotic, and I will not countenance those who do. I don’t care if I’m the last Republican in America standing to resist this man, but with almighty God as my witness, I will not vote for Donald Trump.

This Dad-Daughter Conversation Will Make You Want To Call Your Parents

At some point in your life, you realize your parents are only human: They make mistakes and are probably more like you than you ever recognized growing up.

In the latest installment from “The And,” an interactive documentary series about relationships and familial love, a single dad and daughter from the Netherlands sit down for a heartfelt conversation that touches on their similarities and the challenges they’ve faced together.

The father, Jhein, admits that it worries him that Rosa, the daughter he’s raised on his own since the divorce, is so similar to him.

“You’re so much like me and I haven’t made it easy for myself in my life,” he says. “I see you going that way, too, and I don’t want that for you. When I worry about this, I hope you’ll reassure me that it’s OK that you are the way you are.”

“It’s OK,” Rosa sweetly reminds her dad.

Watch Jhein and Rosa’s full conversation in the video above.

On 50th Anniversary Of First Campus Shooting, Texas Students Can Now Carry Guns

Half a century ago, a sniper perched on a University of Texas tower unleashed a killing spree that left 16 dead, and for the first time since then the school will hold an official memorial for an event that shocked the nation.

But overshadowing the anniversary of the Aug. 1, 1966 tower shooting is the start of a new law backed by Republican lawmakers to allow more guns in more places at public universities.

The lawmakers say the “campus carry” law, which goes into effect August 1, could prevent another mass shooting, while many survivors of the university tower shooting half a century ago see it as a chillingly wrong-headed approach that could spark more killing.

The campus carry law allows those over 21 with a concealed handgun permit to take guns into classrooms and several parts of the campus.

“Guns do not have a place on campus. A university is a battleground of words and ideas, and not of weapons,” said John “Artly” Fox. In 1966, he was a 17-year-old student who crossed one of the killing fields on campus to help carry a pregnant woman shot by sniper Charles Whitman to safety.

[Related: Texas Nobel Laureate: I Will Break The Law To Ban Guns In My Classroom]

“The university could be criticized. Obviously, 50 years is too long. But back then, no one knew how to handle situations like this,” he said in an interview in late July.

The Texas shooting in which Whitman, a 25-year-old former Marine who brought a cache of weapons to the tower’s observation deck about 250 feet (76 meters) in the air, was considered one of the seminal events of the era and the first U.S. mass shooting of live, national TV news.

Whitman was killed by police after he unleashed 90 minutes of terror by shooting more than 40 people from one of the highest spots in the Texas capital.

[Related: Report Reveals Terrifying Flaws In College Campus Gun Laws]

Unlike the mass shootings in recent months and years that are followed by vigils, remembrances and counseling, the remnants from the carnage were quickly cleaned up and students soon returned to their business.

Fox went home after his act of heroism and did not meet the woman he helped pulled to safety, Claire Wilson James, until a few years ago as part of documentary that was being put together on the shooting.

James, then eight months pregnant, survived the attack but lost her baby. Last year, she lobbied unsuccessfully to have Texas lawmakers halt campus carry.

On Monday, the university will unveil a stone monument selected by a committee of the victims that bears the names of those killed when it holds its first official ceremony. It will turn off the tower clock for 24 hours, starting from 11:48 a.m., when the first shots rang out from the perch 50 years ago.

The school did not know how to respond in the aftermath of the shooting, with many thinking the best response was to get over it, not talk about it and just carry on.

Survivors found each other in an informal 2014 remembrance and through the making of a documentary called “Tower” on the shooting that came out this year, with many saying in the movie they still feel emotional scars from that day. They formed a group and pressed the school to mark the event ranked by news services AP and UPI as the number 2 news event in 1966 behind the Vietnam War.

Gregory Fenves, who became president last year after joining the university’s administration in 2008, said the school has tried to keep the anniversary ceremony separate from the start of campus carry. He has spoken to shooting survivors about the memorial.

“A lot has changed as a society and for institutions since then. We understand the healing process, and closure,” he said in an interview.

“One of the lessons is that we do need to deal with the trauma and we need to support the survivors and recognize those who were killed,” he said.

[Related: Texas Professors Warn Allowing Guns In Class Will Inhibit Free Speech]

Texas follows eight other states that allow people to carry concealed weapons on public post-secondary campuses, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Diana Mendoza, who graduated from the university in 2015 and now works at the school, visited the stone memorial on Thursday ahead of its dedication and said it was about time to have an official ceremony.

She is also staunchly opposed to the new campus carry law, which she said is more likely to bring violence back to the school than prevent it.

“Ah Texans and their guns. I am Texan born and raised and campus carry is ridiculous,” Mendoza said. “This could easily happen again.”

Why Women Are Smarter Than Men

2016-07-28-1469724093-4140461-WhyWomenAreSmarterThanMenHP.jpg

Trying to compare intelligence and gender doesn’t typically yield much in the way of productive discussion, but sometimes research comes along that’s worth opening this particular can of worms.

Decades of research show unequivocally that men and women are equal in general intelligence (IQ), but that isn’t the case when it comes to emotional intelligence (EQ). There are subtle, and not so subtle, differences in men’s and women’s expression and understanding of emotions that must be explored and understood.

Gender is a common place for people to assign labels around emotion. Such generalizations have pegged women as everything from the “fairer sex” to overly emotional, and men from emotionally aloof to explosive. You’ll find that none of these platitudes are true.

“Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition.” -Timothy Leary

TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence of more than a million people and it’s clear that women have the upper hand. While women’s overall EQ score is just a couple of points higher than men’s, this is a statistically significant difference that shows that women have greater skill in using emotions to their benefit.

It just doesn’t answer the pressing question: why?

2016-07-28-1469724162-1696794-WhyWomenAreSmarterThanMenHP2.jpg

To understand why women outscore men, we have to look at scores for each of the four emotional intelligence skills by gender. There’s a reliable pattern in the data that points to some interesting explanations for the gap.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is how well you understand your own emotions in the moment, as well as how well you understand your tendencies–the people and situations you handle well and those that push your buttons. This is the one place where men and women have perfectly equal scores. It’s also a place where men have been given a bad rap. People often assume that men aren’t tuned in to their emotions or don’t understand them. Clearly, that isn’t the case. Of course, men also have a tendency to hop on this bandwagon–by feigning to have no awareness or understanding of their emotions–in the hope of avoiding any accountability for their actions. Now we know better.

Self-Management

Self-management is what you do with your emotions once you’re aware of them. Since you can’t make emotions disappear, effective self-management requires channeling your emotions into producing the behavior that you want. This is the one area where men outscored women. I believe that the best explanation for gender differences in emotional intelligence is how we are socialized growing up (reinforced by societal gender pressures we experience as adults). In the case of self-management, men are often expected to be emotionally “strong” and in control of their emotions, which may explain why they outscore women slightly.

Social Awareness

Social awareness is how well you understand the emotions and experience of other people. This requires the ability to tune in to body language and other unspoken signals, since people don’t usually come out and say what’s going on with them. This is an area where women outscore men by a fairly large margin (statistically speaking). This is also a skill that women are socialized to practice and possess from childhood in ways that men aren’t. Right or wrong, women are expected to take care of other people (and are rewarded for doing so). This gives them an upper hand when it comes to social awareness. Men, to their detriment, aren’t rewarded for social awareness in the same way that women are, and this carries over into adulthood.

Relationship Management

Relationship management is the pinnacle of emotional intelligence. It requires that you use self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness in concert to better your relationships as you interact with other people. You cannot hope to get the most out of your interactions with other people until you understand your emotions, cue in to their emotions, and use this knowledge to adjust your approach on the fly. Women have a slight edge in relationship management for reasons described in the social awareness section above.

The Advantage

Emotional intelligence presents a significant advantage for women in the workplace. Whether you’re a man or a woman, don’t just sit back hoping that you’re one of the high-EQ types. EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with effort. To that end, here are a few things that you can do to improve your EQ today:

Limit Your Caffeine Intake

Drinking excessive amounts of caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline, and adrenaline is the source of the fight-or-flight response. The fight-or-flight mechanism sidesteps rational thinking in favor of a faster response to ensure survival. This is great when a bear is chasing you, but not so great when you’re responding to a curt e-mail. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyper-aroused state of stress, your emotions overrun your behavior. Caffeine’s long half-life ensures you stay this way as it takes its sweet time working its way out of your body. High-EQ individuals know that caffeine is trouble, and they don’t let it get the better of them.

Get Enough Sleep

It’s difficult to overstate the importance of sleep to increasing your emotional intelligence. When you sleep your brain removes toxic proteins from its neurons that are by-products of neural activity when you’re awake. Unfortunately, your brain can remove them adequately only while you’re asleep. So when you don’t get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc by impairing your ability to think. Skipping sleep impairs your brain function across the board. It slows your ability to process information and problem solve, kills your creativity, and catapults your stress levels and emotional reactivity. High-EQ individuals know that their self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when they don’t get enough sleep. So, they make sleep a top priority.

Stop Negative Self-Talk in Its Tracks

The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that–thoughts, not facts. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brain’s natural tendency to perceive threats (inflating the frequency or severity of an event). Emotionally intelligent people separate their thoughts from the facts in order to escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive, new outlook.

Appreciate What You Have

Taking time to contemplate what you’re grateful for isn’t merely the right thing to do; it also improves your mood because it reduces the stress hormone cortisol by 23%. Research conducted at the University of California, Davis, found that people who worked daily to cultivate an attitude of gratitude experienced improved mood, energy, and physical well-being. 11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Study Finds Drop In Prescription Drugs In Medical Marijuana States

States looking for a way to reduce Medicare spending and prescription drug use may want to turn to legalizing medical marijuana, a new study suggests.

The District of Columbia and the 17 states that had medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription drugs in 2013 saved an estimated total of $ 165.2 million in Medicare program and enrollee spending that year, researchers at the University of Georgia reported in the journal Health Affairs this month.

“The results suggest that if all states had implemented medical marijuana the overall savings to Medicare would have been around $ 468 million,” a press release on the findings stated.

The researchers looked at prescriptions filled by Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (or Part D) enrollees from 2010 to 2013. They then narrowed the prescriptions down to ones that could be substituted with medical marijuana. Those prescriptions were for ailments that included anxiety, depression, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

Their results found that there were fewer prescriptions filled for the majority of those categories. The pain category, for instance, saw a decrease in 1,826 daily doses, while the depression category saw a 265 daily dosage decrease.

As the researchers noted in their release, they specifically looked at glaucoma patients’ use of marijuana.

“It turns out that glaucoma is one of the most Googled searches linked to marijuana, right after pain,” Dr. David Bradford of the university’s School of Public & International Affairs, who co-authored the report, stated in the university’s release.

The eye disease can be extremely painful and lead to blindness for some patients. Those sufferers who use marijuana, however, can experience a 25 percent decrease in eye pressure that’s caused by the condition, according to the release.

The relief provided by marijuana only lasts about 60 minutes, however, and expecting patients to take it once an hour is considered “unrealistic,” they concluded. Because of that, they stated that they fully expected prescription drug use to remain strong for the disease even when marijuana was an available alternative.

As the university’s release notes, “they were not disappointed.”

Though there were fewer drug prescriptions written for the other ailments, the daily doses of prescribed glaucoma medications increased, they stated.

That led them to believe that medical marijuana users are not requesting prescriptions just to enjoy a high, but are basing their decision on medical needs.

“The results suggest people are really using marijuana as medicine and not just using it for recreational purposes,” the study’s lead author, Ashley Bradford, who completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May, said in a statement.

Speaking in a recent YouTube interview, Bradford expressed hope “that this research will influence and reform policymaking.”

Decreasing Americans’ use of prescription drugs may not just be of monetary benefit, but depending on the type of drug, could help fight Americans’ addiction to prescription painkillers as well.

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2014 alone, opioids ― including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin ― killed more than 28,000 people, more than any year on record. At least half of all those deaths involved a prescription opioid.

“We now know that overdoses from prescription opioid pain relievers are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths,” the CDC states on their website. “Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.”

Three of the most common prescription drugs involved in opioid overdose deaths were methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Today, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized medical marijuana.
